Sonic Utopia Review

Sonic Utopia Game Online

Sonic Utopia is a Sonic gan game that attempts to redefine how 3D Sonic games should be played. What if, instead of boosting, basic platforming, and homing attacks, 3D Sonic games were instead revolving around speed, momentum, and exploration? Even though Sonic Utopia only has a single level so far, that single level introduces all these concepts beautifully. If you're a fan of the Sonic franchise but are tired of the boost formula, then you definitely should give it a try here with our link to the Sonic Utopia latest version.

The controls are simple, but deep at the same time. There's the bog-standard move, jump, and camera controls. However, there's also two buttons labeled 'Down' and 'Peelout'. Down effectively acts like the crouch button - pressing it at any point will effectively put Sonic in a 'Down' position. That means that pressing it while standing still will have Sonic crouch in place, and pressing it while sprinting will send Sonic into a ball roll, letting you go through enemies while losing very little speed. 'Peelout' practically functions as a super spin dash - holding it down will have Sonic turn into a ball and charge up speed. Give it a try right here with this Sonic Utopia download for free.

And speed plays a massive part in Sonic Utopia, much more so than modern Sonic games. Without speed, you won't even be able to navigate through the world. While there is the obvious problem - how can you complete loops without speed - there are also a number of paths and routes that you simply won't be able to navigate without enough speed.

For instance, near the beginning of the game, there is a wall that you can spin dash into to break. However, if you don't have enough speed, Sonic will just bounce off it and you'll feel pretty stupid. There are also a number of slanted walls in the world. With enough speed, you can run along the side of them and unlock brand new routes through the level. If this sounds appealing at all, then you should definitely download Sonic Utopia.

That's still just the tip of the iceberg, though. There are plenty of routes that the player can come up with on their own that the level design doesn't naturally point you towards. For example, there is a fairly obtuse route where you have to jump off the middle of one of those winding roads you see down below, over a massive lake, straight onto the middle of another massive winding road that leads into a loop. You can then fling yourself out of the loop while you're in the middle of running through it to skyrocket straight up and onto a hill, where there's a string of powerups that you can homing attack on to get through the area.

And that's just one improvised route in a massive game. This is a truly impressive sandbox game and is very indicative of what 3D Sonic games could be like. If that sounds like something you want, then you should definitely download Sonic Utopia.

That's not it, though. There are hidden secrets throughout the entire level. There are seven Chaos Emeralds - pretty straightforward for a Sonic game. Grabbing all of them will let you turn into Super Sonic, which will constantly drain your rings but also unlock even more movement techniques not available to normal Sonic. However, there is also another secret that old Sonic fans would recognize - Hyper Sonic. You unlock this by grabbing every Chaos Emerald and finding the Master Emerald. And finding it is a true struggle - you'll have to go deep underwater at a certain place to find yourself in a massive, underwater ruin and reach the end there. Hyper Sonic will abandon all pretenses of needing skill after you displayed so much just simply getting there - it enables you to simply be able to fly through the level. This is a fantastic reward for working your way to the very edges of the map like this, and if you want to prove that you can do it, then you should download Sonic Utopia right here.

There are a couple of cons regarding this game, though. The level design, while rife with potential and beautiful to look at, is a little...too open. While it rewards exploration, it can be far too difficult to find the way forward. There is one goal post in this massive Green Hill zone, and it doesn't exactly stick out. The problem is exacerbated with how many routes there are to take and how twisting and winding they are, forcing you to very quickly forget exactly which way 'forward' was. Indeed, it took me a ton of different restarts to even find the ending to the level.

There are a bunch of enemies around as well, but they were taken wholesale from the 2D games and they were barely updated to deal with all of 3D Sonic's tools. Thus, they're really not threatening at all - they sort of just waddle around while Sonic blazes by. They're really only there for points and the occasional navigational hazard (which can be bypassed because of the sheer freedom you have).

The controls aren't nearly as good as it should be as well if you're playing with a mouse and keyboard. When you have such freedom, there are going to be some jumps that require precision from the player. Having only the 8 directions a keyboard lets you work with just simply doesn't cut it when you're trying to land some of those precise jumps.

Sonic Utopia is an experimental fully-3D Sonic the Hedgehog fan-game. The idea of the game is to reimagine how the series could be in 3D, remaining more faithful to the 2D games that started the franchise. It's currently in development but a demo was released in 2016.

The creator of Sonic Utopia, Mr Lange, is unsatisfied with the series' 3D titles. They're not enough like the 2D ones. Sonic Utopia changes this by being more based on the 2D games than Sonic Adventure was. It's meant to be to Sonic what Super Mario 64 was to Super Mario Bros.. Everything is Classic-themed, from Sonic's design to the general art design, and the gameplay is based on the Classic style.

Everything in the demo is built from scratch except for a few placeholder sounds and sound effects from Sonic the Hedgehog: The Movie.

Sonic Utopia provides examples of:

  • Anti-Frustration Features: Despite largely being based on the Genesis games, Sonic still has the Homing Attack from the Adventure games to make hitting enemies easier. Unlike the Adventure games though, hitting an enemy with the Homing Attack doesn't kill your momentum.
  • Fan Game: Sonic Utopia is being designed from the ground-up by a team of Sonic fans.
  • Genre Throwback: The Sonic Utopia demo is a 3D version of the Mega Drive titles.
  • Green Hill Zone: The demo is a literal 3D reimagining of Green Hill Zone. It expands upon the level by making it a huge, expansive landscape.
  • Sliding Scale of Linearity vs. Openness: Point 3 on the scale. The game takes the level design philosophy of the Genesis games of having three paths and massively expands on it. The level is still 'get from point A to point B', but the sheer vastness of it can make it feel like an open world at times. The end result is comparable to that of the areas in Xenoblade Chronicles.

  • Wheel o' Feet: Sonic has this like in the classic games, stylised to look good in 3D.
